Abstract: Fifth-Generation (5G) wireless technology represents the next milestone in mobile wireless communications, targeting more signal traffic, increased capacity and reduced latency. To achieve these goals, networks will widen bandwidths by pushing into the millimeter-wave spectrum, increase base station density, employ multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) technology, and implement beam-forming antennas. These enabling technologies place new demands on the underlying RF front-end components, particularly the filters required to implement these new networks. As current RF and acoustic filter technologies fall short in performance at higher frequencies, system designers will need to explore a wide range of alternatives, including the use of integrated waveguide filters.
