Electroceuticals Technologies and Modelling: Fundamental Requirements to Effectively Manage Future Therapies

The “electroceutical” is a new multidisciplinary initiative for medical treatments using electric/magnetic/electromagnetic power to modulate a number of body functions controlled by neurological circuits. These functions are very wide, spanning from control of neuro-disorders,to heart pathologies, or endocrine or metabolic dysfunctions. Clearly, a wide variety of theoretical approaches, technologies and different knowledges converge onto such applications. In this presentation, a summary of the important role played by the technology and advanced modelling techniques is provided attempting to give a unifying take home message to the IMS community. Such an attempt seems useful for more rapid advancements in this new area of the research. Furthermore, the new challenges opened by this innovative therapeutic approaches will be presented and a road map for future and effective developments delineated.
