Photonics-Based Techniques for In-Band Full-Duplex Applications

Microwave photonics technologies have emerged as possible solutions for mitigating radio-frequency (RF) interference. Driven by commercial and military needs, RF interference mitigation encompasses a number of applications such as electronic protection, full-duplex radio, and other simultaneous transmit/receive systems. Requirements for interference mitigation technology are application-specific. The most challenging needs ask for suppression/isolation well in excess of 100dB with operational frequencies up to the mm-wave and instantaneous bandwidths over 1GHz. Such metrics are difficult to achieve with a singular method and drive towards layered solutions using analog and digital electronics. The premise of this work is that microwave photonics be considered in layered interference mitigation, leveraging the bandwidth afforded by optics.
